GOLA is a contemporary adaptation of a national ceremony emphasises the aspect of „spectacle“: a large-scale event, triggering emotions of heroism.

GOLA utilises and criticise the format of national ceremonies: a form of theatre/narration used to transmit a notion of collectivity, grief, victory, pride and above all nationalism.

GOLA is our ceremony, created to tell our story. The one of those who miss-belong, those who left and betrayed their home. Those who took another way. Those who live the death of an old identity and the birth of a new one. Those who rebel all alone.

GOLA is about those who lost their way home. GOLA is sorrow within me.

Reut Shemesh persönliche Biografie ist geprägt vom Verlust der eigenen Identität: Sie hat ihre Heimat Israel verlassen, ein gespaltenes Land, dessen Zerrissenheit sich in den Familiengeschichten Vieler fortsetzt. Als Kind, als Teenagerin und im Rahmen ihres Militärdienstes bei der israelischen Armee mit einer Vielzahl von Zeremonien konfrontiert, hinterfragt und analysiert Shemesh in GOLA zum einen diese Form des ideologischen Theaters mit all seinen heroischen Gesten und kollektiv geleisteten Versprechen und widmet sich zum anderen der Frage nach der verlorenen Zugehörigkeit.
